Alternate: The Honorable Wayland J. Sermons, Jr.

Judge Wayland J. Sermons, Jr. is the Senior Resident Superior Court Judge for the Second Judicial District, serving Beaufort, Martin, Washington, Tyrrell, and Hyde counties. 

Prior to being elected to the bench, Judge Sermons practiced criminal, civil, real estate, and municipal law for 29 years in eastern North Carolina.  Judge Sermons has served as President of the Superior Court Judge’s Conference, and currently serves on the State Judicial Council. He also has been assigned to several three judge panels as a Superior Court Judge, related to both Innocence and redistricting cases, as well as numerous complex civil cases, mostly medical malpractice. 

Judge Sermons is a native of Beaufort County.  He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his JD from Wake Forest Law School.  Judge Sermons and his wife Penny Gillam Sermons, from Bertie County, currently reside in Washington, NC.  They have two children, Elizabeth Aaron of Tucson, Arizona and Wayland Sermons, III of Raleigh.
