Commissioner: Kevin Frye

Sheriff Kevin Lee Frye, 52, was appointed to serve a three-year term on the Innocence Inquiry Commission in January 2016.

Sheriff Frye began his career in law enforcement in 1985. In 1988 he was the first Narcotic Detective in Avery County. In 1989 he became one of the first 15 Certified Criminal Investigators of the NC Justice Academy.

Sheriff Frye graduated from Lees-McRae College in 2009 with Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice and has Advanced Certificates from both Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Division and Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Division.

Sheriff Frye served as the President of NC Sheriff’s Association in 2013/2014 and as Chairman of the NC Sheriff’s Executive Committee in 2014/2015.

Sheriff Frye is married to Cheri Frye, who works at Avery High School. He has two children—Jared Frye (22) in Pharmacy School at Wingate University and Caitlyn Frye (15) a sophomore at Avery County High School.
