Derek D’Orazio

Derek is a licensed attorney, MBA and veteran. He is also a certified HR professional and a certified project management professional. Derek came to the Commission from the State of Hawaii Judiciary, where he was Chief Adjudicator in charge of the Administrative Driver’s License Revocation Office for the State of Hawaii. Derek has extensive legal, investigations, HR, finance and operational experience.

Throughout his career, Derek has worked as an investigator, prosecutor, defense counsel, judicial clerk, and hearing officer. Derek has collectively investigated, prosecuted, defended and adjudicated thousands of cases in myriad jurisdictions across the country, including North Carolina. His international experience includes representing the United States at the International Maritime Organization in Europe and working with the International Labour Organization on fair pay and safe working conditions for merchant mariners.

Highlights of Derek’s military career as a United States Coast Guard Officer include being a first responder to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill crisis in 2010, and later in his career serving as Executive Officer of Coast Guard Base Honolulu.
